ArchaeoVault is a national domain repository for non-field archaeological data – i.e., not for primary records of finds from the field, but data created by their analytical processing using laboratory or digital methods. The goal is to securely store, make accessible, and link all such data related to Czech archaeology: from Czech research in the territory of the Czech Republic, through foreign research carried out in the Czech Republic, to Czech research and the participation of Czech researchers in projects abroad. However, we are also open to relevant submissions from abroad.
ArchaeoVault complements the Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic (AIS) – it covers data that is not covered by the AIS. Both systems are linked using persistent identifiers and shared vocabularies wherever possible.
We primarily store geospatial data, laboratory analysis results, anthropological data, 3D models, and database/synthetic outputs. Formats and metadata profiles were set in cooperation with domain experts. We provide data curation (validation, harmonization, persistent identifiers) and link to specialized external repositories where appropriate.
The repository development was funded as one of the pilot repositories of the National Repository Platform and is operated by the Digitalia MUNI ARTS research infrastructure with a connection to LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ. The disciplinary guarantee is provided by the Institute of Archeology and Museology, in cooperation with the Archaeological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Prague, Brno) and in connection with the AIS of the Czech Republic.
The pilot operation was launched at the end of 2025. The team includes a dedicated data curator responsible for data quality, sustainability, and interoperability. The repository is continuously expanded with additional collections, standards, and integrations.
